Leadership

The Mayor must lead.

It will be, and it is, critical that the Mayor of Florence get out in front, take strong and thoughtful positions, and unite the people behind him.

Unfortunately, time after time our leadership has failed to lead.

Our Leadership stood by while sales taxes were increased on the poorest among us; shifting the burden to those least able to afford it. While, at the same time, the richest were receiving tax breaks. [see commentary on 1cent sales tax]

Our Leadership has accepted as forgone the conclusion that the citizens of Florence must either accept poverty or tolerate a coal burning power plant on the banks of the Pee Dee river; a plant which will pollute our environment, pumping mercury and carbon dioxide into our lakes, streams and air, and endangering the health and future of our children and their children for generations. [see commentary on Coal Power Plant].

Our Leadership has facilitated an economic development approach that chooses tax breaks and zoning allowances for super-centers, which offer low paying jobs with few benefits, over the small businesses that have supported this community for so long.

Do you even know what our present Mayor’s position is on these issues?

If a Mayor is afraid to take a position, he is afraid to lead.

The citizens of the City of Florence deserve leadership that can unite and inspire the community, rich and poor, black and white, north-side and south-side. We need a government that will pursue economic growth without sacrificing our health and quality of life.

We deserve leadership that will challenge the convention of what is with the dream of what could be.
